'Smoking' Scottish Contact Centre

To combat smokers flouting the recently imposed laws a contact centre hotline is to be created allowing the public to 'grass' on smokers.

Anyone seen ignoring the new legislation by lighting up risks being reported to a call centre, which will be open every day of the year.

From March 26, it will be an offence for anyone in Scotland to smoke in enclosed public spaces, including pubs, clubs, restaurants, hotels, workplaces and taxis.

"The Scottish Executive is determined to enforce the ban and will launch the hotline ahead of the ban. Calls will be logged and forwarded daily to Glasgow's environmental health officers.

Premises which prove to be a problem may be subjected to spot checks by enforcement officers.

Tommy McDonald, city council depute director of environmental protection, said as well as phoning the Executive number, anyone in the city could call a council out-of-hours number, which will be announced before the ban is introduced.

Mr McDonald admitted it would not be possible for the out-of-hours team to respond immediately to every complaint about smoking.

He said: "That would be asking too much because it would be almost impossible to catch people in the act. But we will bring the complaint to the attention of the people in charge of the bar or club. Depending on how many complaints come in to us, we could put a premises under surveillance.

All calls will be charged at the local rate and the callers will be asked for their name and address, but may remain anonymous.
