First Ashford closure - Is Whitley next on the agenda?

After the announcement last month of the closure of its Ashford contact centre, Click Here, the Spanish banking giant has announced possible plans to close its contact centre in Whitley Near Portsmouth with the loss of up to 160 jobs at the end of the year.

Management and staff at the contact centre, which primarily handles the processing of mortgages processes, have entered into a 90-day consultation period after which a final decision will be made regarding the future of the site.

Andy Smith, spokesman for Santander, said: 'Once the consultation period is over there will be another meeting to decide the final outcome. The roles would be re-located to Bradford and Teesside but we do understand that most people will not want to relocate that far. 'We do have a lot of redeployment in place and they (the staff) would not be out of work until the end of the year.

'If the site does close we will offer staff time off to have interviews elsewhere. We will do everything we can to either redeploy staff, relocate to other sites or help them find other work.'
