Criminals
try to bribe Abbey contact centre staff
Criminals have been attempting to bribe contact centre workers to pass on customer banking details as they walk through a city centre subway.
The Abbey bank has confirmed that staff working at its centre close to the Bradford Interchange railway station have been targeted by would-be identity thieves trying to induce them to steal valuable customer information.
Abbey called in police to help combat the problem which has developed over recent months, particularly in the subway near the contact centre and as a result, extra security measures have been put in place in the subway, including increased police and security patrols and CCTV coverage.
An Abbey spokeswoman said: "Staff have been coming to us saying they have had approaches made to them, offering money in order to get details of customer information. Because information is often held centrally, people who are that way inclined realise they have to target people in different ways.
"They either try online or they try this way of approaching people. We can't control people out side of work but it is unnerving to our staff and we don't want them to be in that situation. Police are working with us about the type of people who have been approaching our staff and what sort of information they have been wanting. We do have security measures that will pick up anyone trying to use customer information and we have no evidence of anyone getting through our internal systems."
Staff have been advised to report any approaches either to a dedicated helpline, senior management or the police.
