Consumer Direct Contact Centre Booms in Barrow!

A  high-tech contact centre set-up by Cumbria County Council and Agilisys Ltd, funded by the Department of Trade and Industry is going from strength to strength and looks set to create even more jobs.

The Consumer Direct contact centre in Barrow has already created 37 full time jobs and another 20 people began training this week. More job recruitment is expected to take place this autumn and the county council is keen to see even more jobs created in future.

In April 2005 Cumbria County Council and its IT partner, Agilisys, won the nomination to run the Department of Trade and Industry's flagship Consumer Direct advice service in Barrow.

Cumbria County Council's cabinet has now agreed to respond positively to Government consultation on whether Consumer Direct centres should expand their roles and provide call centres and on-line facilities for other consumer organisations such as PostWatch, EnergyWatch and the OFCOM Consumer Panel. Cabinet went a step further by volunteering the Barrow Consumer Direct centre as a pilot scheme for possible changes.

Elizabeth Mallinson, cabinet spokeswoman for access to services, said: "The success at Consumer Direct is a great example of what we can do if we work together with our partners like Agilysis. Our Trading Standards staff have worked very hard on this project and have done a great job bringing so many quality jobs to Barrow and we want this success to continue."

Head of Trading Standards Phil Ashcroft said: "Things have been going very well so far. Demand is very high for the services at Consumer Direct and there are still several authorities which have yet to start sending their calls there. We are already expecting to have to recruit more Consumer Direct staff in the autumn."
