Garlands becomes net recycler of waste

In the last 12 months, Garlands Call Centres has gone from a company that throws away 60 percent of its waste to one that recycles 60 percent of its waste - and the company is now setting its sights on moving environmental policies to the next level.

"By the end of 2009, we hope to be recycling around 70 percent of our waste paper, plastics, cardboard and coffee vending cups" states Martyn Collins, Garlands' Environmental Manager. "Garlands staff are definitely playing their part in meeting the Government's objective of reducing waste to landfill."

Over the last few months, Garlands has launched a number of initiatives in support of its recycling objectives. It has:

- launched an internal poster campaign to encourage recycling
- run regular bullet-ins about recycling on Radio GaGa, the company's in-house radio station,
- issued a managers' briefing to encourage colleagues to come up with their own ideas on recycling

However, as Martyn Collins explains, it's not a hard sell policy. "We make sure that recycling units are near at hand and promote the idea of recycling internally via our Care Club and email communications. People have been only too happy to play their part in supporting our schemes and have put forward lots of interesting new ideas. Their active participation has undoubtedly been the biggest factor in our recycling success."

To encourage further staff participation, Garlands will soon provide staff with figures on which departments and sites are its top performing 'recyclers'. These figures will be published via In Touch, the company's in-house newsletter.
