It's a 'Racing Certainty' that they will go Offshore
After prewarning the industry back in August 2009 (read full article here) High Street and online bookmakers William Hill have announced the closure of its UK telephone betting division with the loss of up to 150 contact centre jobs at its sites in Leeds and Sheffield; the Leeds contact centre will close and with the Sheffield contact centre being transferred to outsourcing giant Vertex.
The loss making division will be transferred to Gibraltar have citied a change in the taxation system and increased costs compared to their competitors as confirmed by William Hill's Chief Executive Ralph Topping,
"This significant change to our telephone business is a response to the challenge of competing with betting exchanges and offshore telebetting operators, all of whom have benefitted from significant cost and tax advantages over UK bookmakers. This has made it impossible for our existing business to compete profitably from the UK."
