Ladbrokes - Set to close Aintree based contact centre - 263 jobs losses

It has been announced by Ladbroke's Chief Executive Chris Bell that the Bookmaking giant is set to close its Aintree based contact centre; its Harrow. Middlesex operation, which employs 220 staff,  will ultimately receive the betting calls.

Ladbrokes’ telephone betting operation, which handle more than six million calls annually 24/7, recently reported a half-year loss after a 41% fall in revenues and citied competition from overseas companies who are not subject to the same tax laws as the main reason for both the job cuts and significant drop in profits.

A Spokesman for Ladbroke, Ciaran O’Brien commented, “Telephone betting is a very competitive market and one that is becoming increasingly difficult for UK-based operators, who face significantly higher levels of tax than those operating from offshore jurisdictions.”

He commented that In the UK all telephone betting is subject to tax at 15% on its gross profits, 10% tax on profits made on racing in the UK, VAT and finally corporation tax which is currently 28% of its profits.
Overseas operators are not subjected to any racing levy and pay only very small rates of tax.
